Leo Lebot of Vanuatu returned to the World Aquatics Swimming Championships with determination and ambition in the men’s 50m freestyle. Having competed earlier in the week, he faced a longer wait for his final race, but that wait certainly paid off as he emerged from the pool with both a new personal best and a national record.
As one of the youngest competitors in his heat, Leo showcased his immense potential and skill, finishing impressively with a time of 27.38 seconds. His strong performance began with a robust entry into the water, achieving a reaction time of 0.68 seconds. This strong start set the tone for his race, where he demonstrated strength and precision, clocking split times of 13.30 for the first 25m and an impressive final lap of 14.08.
Reflecting on his powerful performance, Leo expressed his joy and sense of accomplishment. “I’m really happy,” he said, with pride. “I came here to make Vanuatu proud, and I’m really honored to represent my country.” This sentiment of honour and responsibility propelled Leo throughout this prestigious international event, allowing him to leave with his head held high.
Grateful for the opportunity to compete in Budapest, Leo acknowledged the support of his teammates and fellow Pacific island competitors. He shared how much he enjoyed the overall experience, saying, “Just spending time with my team, we really get along well. It’s a joy to be here together because it’s an amazing opportunity that lots of people wish for. I’m really grateful to be here, so we’ll enjoy it.”
As Leo pursued his aspirations on this international stage, he remained focused on his goals: “I want to be the best swimmer for my country and attend as many international swimming competitions to make my country proud.” With national records secured in both of his events, Leo can now return home with satisfaction, having represented Vanuatu with excellence.
A joyful and determined member of Team Vanuatu, Leo hopes to inspire young swimmers with his words of encouragement. “Never give up, no matter how hard training is and no matter what facilities you have – always do your best.” This powerful message encapsulates Leo’s journey and commitment to the sport, serving as inspiration for aspiring athletes everywhere.
Leo Lebot leaves the World Aquatics Championships with records and memories and a reinforced dedication to his discipline. As he returns to Vanuatu, it is clear that this young swimmer will continue to make waves in the world of swimming.
