There are some moments in sport that go beyond the stopwatch, moments that capture heart, joy, and years of effort all in one powerful performance. That’s exactly what Olympian Loane Russet delivered for Vanuatu in the Women’s 50m Butterfly on Day 6 of the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Singapore.
Returning from the pool absolutely bursting with pride, Loane described her race:
“Amazing! I’m really happy with my time,” she beamed. She touched the wall at 30.69 seconds, a new personal best and national record, breaking the mark she had set earlier this year at the Australian University Nationals.
“My goal before this race was to get under 31 seconds and I did!” she said, still catching her breath. “So I’m really happy right now! I’m just so happy.”
When asked to reflect on her highlight of the entire competition, she didn’t hesitate. “My 50 Fly right now,” she said. “That’s a goal I’ve had in mind for so long and I finally did it!”
Despite the magnitude of the event, Loane remains grounded and humble even while competing on a world stage. “It’s really hard for me,” she admitted when asked how she handles nerves. “It’s such an amazing environment. It’s crazy to be around so many athletes and we all want to give the best of ourselves. I can get really nervous sometimes, so I just talk to my teammate, my coach, and try to enjoy the moment.”
As one of the standout young athletes from Vanuatu, Loane is becoming a role model and she embraces the responsibility with warmth and sincerity, “It may be hard, physically and mentally, but don’t give up because it’s worth it in the end,” she said when asked what advice she’d give to younger swimmers. “Even if you don’t have proper facilities to train in. It seems huge coming to competitions like this, but don’t give up. Believe in yourself. You’re gonna get it!”
Part of what fuels her spirit is the sense of connection within the Oceania team. “I love being around the Oceania group,” she said. “We’re all friends. They’re such a good vibe. I just love being around them, everything is so fun. It’s like one big family.”
Loane is more than a swimmer breaking national records, she’s the embodiment of belief, determination and joy. As she looks ahead to future competitions, her vibrant energy and positivity are matched by a strong sense of purpose.
