FINAU OHUAFI COMPLETES WORLDS WITH SECOND PERSONAL BEST IN POWERFUL FREESTYLE FINISH

Finau Kingdom of Tonga

Tonga’s Finau Ohuafi brought his competition to a close on Day 4 of the 22nd World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Singapore, delivering a gutsy and determined swim in the Men’s 100m Freestyle and earning his second personal best of the meet.

Lining up in heat five of one of the most popular events for Pacific Island athletes, Finau raced alongside Josh Tarere (PNG) and Israel Poppe (Guam), in a field filled with regional pride and strong rivalries. He entered the race with a previous best of 54.07, and after a clean start and determined finish, touched the wall in 53.76, taking over three-tenths off his time.

With a reaction time of 0.70, Finau kept his race sharp and composed from the start, clocking 25.83 for the opening 50m and 27.93 on the way home. A clear example of strong pacing, training and grit. It was his second personal best of the competition, following a strong performance earlier in the week in the 50m Butterfly.

Though exhausted from his race, the effort Finau poured into his final swim said everything. From start to finish, he gave it his all pushing himself through every stroke, every wall, and every breath. There’s no question that this was a race full of heart.

Finau, 24, is a proud representative of the Tongan Swimming Federation, he trains in Australia on a World Aquatics Scholarship at Bond University, a program that continues to support and develop elite talent from Oceania. His work ethic, humility, and consistent improvement have made him a role model within the team and the region.

This was the final race of Finau’s Worlds campaign in Singapore, he leaves the competition with two personal bests and his head held high. For him, swimming is more than just times and finishes, it’s about the opportunity to represent his country, to make his family proud, and to chase big dreams with gratitude.

His ultimate goal is to reach the Olympic Games, and he often speaks about wanting to make his mom proud above all else. While there were no words from Finau today, the performance he gave in the pool spoke volumes – of dedication, sacrifice, and the quiet strength that defines many Pacific athletes on the world stage.

Finau’s journey continues beyond Singapore, but for now, he closes this chapter having achieved what every athlete hopes for – to finish stronger than he started, to give it everything, and to represent his country with pride.
