Friday 13 December
As the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest reaches its fourth day of competition, Liana Planz represents America Samoa in her debut world championship swim. As she sat in the call room, before her 100m butterfly, she felt nervous but was mindful of what she needed to do, she controlled her breathing and felt good as she entered the pool deck.
She was joined in this heat by fellow Pacific islander Amaya Bollinger from Guam and they both hit the water first with identical reaction times of 0.65. An incredible representation of the hard work and focus of island swimmers.
Liana took in this race with excitement, she had waited until the middle of the competition for her race to come around which was tough for her as all she wanted to do was get into the water. Recognising the honour of being the sole representative of her island nation, America Samoa, Liana takes home a national record and personal best in this event from a final finishing time of 1:05.68.
With support from her friends, team and Dad in the crowd, Liana showcased great skill and ability as she received strong split times of 14.12, 16.50, 17.51 and 17.55 – a true demonstration of her hard work and commitment.
Liana reflected on her experience in this competition and her ‘ah ha’ moment was realising it’s “so cool that I get to compete in this pool”. She now goes into her second race the following day, feeling good and with high expectations of herself now she has her first race completed.
Flying the flag for America Samoa, Liana is set to continue her journey at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships with renewed confidence and determination. As she gears up for her next event, 50m freestyle, Liana is proud to represent her island nation and eager to build on her achievements and personal bests.
With the support of her family, friends, and fellow Pacific island teammates, Liana is ready to embrace the challenges that lie ahead. Her passion and dedication are evident, and as she steps onto the pool deck once again, she will undoubtedly carry the spirit of America Samoa with her.
